It’s raining!

Filed under: Baby, Dallas Cowboys — mstjern @ 7:56 am

Finally some rain and it’s not 105 degrees! It’s supposed to stay this way for a week – woohoo! Only wish that it had been this way Saturday, as the Cowboys – Whiners game was miserably hot. Thanks to S we got to spend the second half in a luxary box though, which, if we hadn’t, we probably would’ve left. Debating if I should even go to the game on Thursday if it’s sunny outside.

Otherwise a good weekend, Elvis is growing and we’re looking forward to finding out if it’s a boy or girl. Looks like we don’t get to know that until a couple of weeks from now though. We went shopping and looked at baby strollers, toys & clothes and I’m dying to buy some clothes (the “Daddy is a rock star” shirt was tempting. Very tempting) for the little one.

Ugh. C just IM’d me saying that she might have to go to Dublin for 2 weeks :(

I’m way behind on email, so don’t get mad if I haven’t responded to your email yet. You’re not alone.

Life in a start-up

Filed under: Work — mstjern @ 7:39 am

So I work in a start-up.

I actually founded it 4 years ago, we’ve been doing pretty well, but we’re still small enough that I still get the fun calls in the middle of the night that the server is down.

Last night was a night like that.

3am wake-up call, servers are not responding. ISP claims no knowledge until I’ve escalated 2 levels to get to someone who actually knows what they’re talking about and admits they’re having an issue with a router.

Make a big pot of coffee as I realize this is going to be a long morning with only 3 hours of sleep.

We’re a real-time business, tying into shopping carts all over the place so all of our customers are affected by this, of course.

I wake up the infrastructure team (eh…guy) and he helps me troubleshoot. One of the developers was up working still from the night before helping me out as well. I think he passed out though, because he’s no longer responding to IMs.

Packet loss goes up & down and all I can do is stare at it, send out notifications to customers and pray that the ISP networking team actually knows what they are doing. I have my doubts.

After no word from the ISP in question for 1 hour, I get mad and email the CEO/Chairman. He calls me back within 15 minutes, telling me that he’ll have an answer for me within 15 minutes.. (pretty impressive, actually, but he’s new, so I’m sure he’ll get over that in a few months).

15 minutes later, the CEO calls back with no answer and is begging for another 15 minutes. Left with no other choice, I say yes.

5 cups of coffee and 6 hours later, the issue is resolved.

It’s 9am in the morning and I’ve been working for 6 hours. The sales guys just got to the office and are calling me with questions.

It’s going to be a long day.

Fear

Bill Harris writes about fear and kids. I would not have understood that way of thinking a couple of months ago, since it’s not logical, but now, for some reason, it is.

When I’m 34

Filed under: Baby — mstjern @ 3:23 pm

Life happens. Fast.

I wonder what I thought when I was little what I was going to be doing when I was 34?

I’m thinking 34 sounded really old. It doesn’t feel like it right now though. Then again, 19 days to go, I’m still 33. Dammit.

11-0, 11-0

I so rock at Table Tennis on the 360. :) (was playing against M last night. I rock)

C is in H-town this week, so it’s very quiet here in the house. At least I got out of the house last night helping M&S set up their network at their beatiful, new house, and played some 360. Looks like the 360 wireless connection needs to be wired to work for gaming though, so need to plan an early morning “crawl-in-the-attic”-session with them at some point in the near future. Got home and started the second season of my dynasty in NCAA 2007, didn’t get to sleep until 2am-ish.

Then Gizmo decided that we needed to wake up at 8 this morning by howling like..eh…a dog, so I’m going on 6 hours of sleep.

/yes, after 11-0, 11-0 I happened to lose a Fight Night Round 3 match against M in the 7th round, but it was close.
